Cocktail History
The Adios Motherfucker, also known as the AMF, is a classic cocktail that was originally created in the United States in the 1980s but regained popularly in the 2010s. The bright blue recipe is essentially a Long Island Iced Tea that is also made with an equal-parts base of vodka, gin, rum, and tequila, but instead of triple sec and cola, it calls for blue curaçao and lemon lime soda.
Cocktail Ingredients
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:
Lemon Lime Soda: This is a carbonated beverage made with a blend of natural citrus flavorings, caffeine, water, and sugar or high fructose corn syrup, which are infused with carbon dioxide gas to develop a fizzy, sour flavor.
Vodka: This is a spirit made with fermented grains or potatoes and water, which are distilled and then filtered to develop a clean, neutral flavor.
Gin: This is a spirit made by redistilling a neutral spirit with juniper berries and other botanicals to develop a distinctive, aromatic flavor.
White Rum: This is a type of rum made with fermented sugarcane juice or molasses and yeast, which are distilled and then typically left unaged or briefly aged and filtered to develop a light, spiced flavor.
Tequila Blanco: This is a type of tequila made in Mexico with fermented blue agave and yeast, which are distilled and then left unaged to develop a bright, agave-forward flavor.
Blue Curaçao: This is a liqueur made with dried laraha orange peels, spices, distilled alcohol, water, and sugar, which are blended, infused, and then dyed with food coloring to develop a sweet, citrusy flavor and bright blue color.
Sweet & Sour Mix: This is a sweetener made with lemon juice, lime juice, white sugar, and water, which are blended and heated into a syrup with a balanced sweet-tart flavor.
Lemon Slice: This is a slice of lemon that has been cut into a half wheel shape.
Brandied Cherry: This is a type of stone fruit made by soaking maraschino cherries in brandy, water, and spices to make a rich, fruity syrup.
Bartending Tools
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:
Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. I used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Bar Spoon: This is used to stir ingredients. I used the Barfly Stainless Steel Teardrop Bar Spoon.
Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. I used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.
Cocktail Pick: This is used to hold the garnish. I used one from the I-MART Stainless Steel Cocktail Pick Set.
Tasting Notes
This cocktail has the following flavor profile:
• Appearance: Bright fizzy blue color
• Aroma: Citrus, juniper, and agave
• Taste: Refreshing lemon-lime flavor mixed with gin botanicals, rum spices, smoky tequila
• Finish: Effervescent citrus notes
Kendall’s Take: “I can see why this drink is a popular pick for chain restaurants and college town bars. Provocative name aside, it’s quite tasty, and in my opinion, that’s largely because it just tastes like lemon-lime soda. Add in the blue color, and it’s inevitable that the Adios Motherfucker becomes an instant crowd-pleaser wherever it’s made. I don’t think I’d make it again because there’s so much blue curaçao in it, but I’d so go for it if you’re intrigued and want to try it for yourself.”
