Cocktail History
The So Uncivilized is a Novel Nightcaps original cocktail that was created in honor of May the 4th, also known as Star Wars Day. It was inspired by Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Master and the close friend of Anakin Skywalker’s in the second Star Wars movie trilogy that was released in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The recipe is meant to capture the sophistication of the character, so it starts with Cognac as the base spirit, adds in some complementary citrus, baking spice, and chai notes, and ends up in this amber-hued showstopper.
Cocktail Ingredients
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:
Cognac: This is a type of brandy made in Cognac, France with distilled white wine. I used Courvoisier VSOP Cognac.
Licor 43: This is a liqueur made in Spain with a secret blend of forty-three ingredients, including spices, herbs, roots, citrus, sugar, and alcohol.
Mandarine Napoleon Liqueur: This is a liqueur made with mandarin oranges, tangerines, botanicals, sugar, and brandy.
Chai Liqueur: This is a liqueur made with black tea, spices, sugar, and alcohol.
Rich Brown Sugar Syrup: This is a sweetener made with 2:1 brown sugar and water. I made mine using this stovetop recipe.
Orange & Fig Bitters: This is a food product made with oranges, figs, botanicals, herbs, and alcohol. I used Scrappy’s Bitters “Sycophant” Orange & Fig Bitters.
Orange Twist: This is the peel of an orange that has been twisted into a corkscrew shape.
Bartending Tools
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:
Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. I used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Mixing Glass: This is used to hold the ingredients while they’re being stirred. I used the Viski 17 oz Cocktail Mixing Glass.
Bar Spoon: This is used to stir ingredients. I used the Barfly Stainless Steel Teardrop Bar Spoon.
Julep Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is stirred. I used the A Bar Above Julep Strainer.
Peeler: This is used to remove the garnish peel from the citrus. I used the OXO Good Grips 2-Piece Peeler Set.

Tasting Notes
This cocktail has the following flavor profile:
• Appearance: Brown-ish orange color
• Aroma: Citrus and spices
• Taste: Vanilla flavor followed by chai’s spices, herbs, dry brandy, and orange
• Finish: More baking spices, fig, and tart citrus
Kendall’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Kendall’s Take: “This cocktail is much more serious than I usually go for, but I have to give it five stars because the So Uncivilized is so tasty and creative. The chai lands on the front of your tongue right away, while the citrus, fig, and syrup mellow out the brandy spice nicely. If ever there were a drink that nailed the essence of Obi-Wan Kenobi, this is it! It really doesn’t get closer to the fan-favorite Jedi Master in drink form than this sophisticated sip.”
