Cocktail History
The So Uncivilized is a Sips From Scripts original cocktail that was created in honor of May the 4th, also known as Star Wars Day. It was inspired by Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Master and the close friend of Anakin Skywalker’s in the second Star Wars movie trilogy that was released in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Our goal was to create a recipe that captured the sophistication of the character, so we started with Cognac as the base spirit, added in some complementary citrus, baking spice, and chai notes, and ended up with this amber-hued showstopper.
Cocktail Ingredients
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:
Cognac: This is a type of brandy made in Cognac, France with distilled white wine. We used Courvoisier VSOP Cognac because it has a rich mouthfeel and a delightful brandy spice with notes of peach, almond, and cinnamon. For a low-proof version of this drink, try Escape Mocktails Non-Alcoholic Cognac Alternative in place of the brandy.
Licor 43: This is a liqueur made in Spain with a secret blend of forty-three ingredients, including spices, herbs, roots, citrus, sugar, and alcohol.
Mandarine Napoleon Liqueur: This is a liqueur made with mandarin oranges, tangerines, botanicals, sugar, and brandy. For a low-proof version of this drink, try Monin Premium Triple Sec Syrup in place of the orange liqueur.
Chai Liqueur: This is a liqueur made with black tea, spices, sugar, and alcohol. For a low-proof version of this drink, try Monin Chai Tea Concentrate in place of the chai liqueur.
Rich Brown Sugar Syrup: This is a sweetener made with 2:1 brown sugar and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s stovetop recipe.
Orange & Fig Bitters: This is a food product made with oranges, figs, botanicals, herbs, and alcohol. We used Scrappy’s Bitters “Sycophant” Orange & Fig Bitters.
Orange Twist: This is the peel of an orange that has been twisted into a corkscrew shape.
Bartending Tools
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:
Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Mixing Glass: This is used to hold the ingredients while they’re being stirred. We used the Viski 17 oz Cocktail Mixing Glass.
Bar Spoon: This is used to stir ingredients. We used the Barfly Stainless Steel Teardrop Bar Spoon.
Julep Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is stirred. We used the A Bar Above Julep Strainer.
Peeler: This is used to remove the garnish peel from the citrus. We used the OXO Good Grips 2-Piece Peeler Set.

Tasting Notes
The So Uncivilized largely starts with the aroma of orange, has the initial taste of vanilla that’s followed by chai’s telltale spice, and ends with the combination of vanilla, herbs, dry brandy, and orange all together in a complex finish.
Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: We were both blown away with how tasty this recipe was, especially given how easily it came to us compared to the others. Its delightful spice and complex, lighthearted flavor landed it a full five stars from us both; we highly recommend the So Uncivilized to anyone craving a boozy, serious cocktail that’s still on theme.
Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“This cocktail is much more serious than I usually go for, but I just have to give it five stars because it’s so tasty and creative. The chai lands on the front of your tongue right away, while the citrus, fig, and syrup mellow out the brandy spice nicely. If ever there were a drink that nailed the essence of Obi-Wan Kenobi, this is it! It really doesn’t get closer to the fan-favorite Jedi Master in drink form than this sophisticated sip.”
