Cocktail History
The Wedding Coat is a modern cocktail that was first published in The Official Downton Abbey Cocktail Book by Lou Bustamante. Inspired by Carson’s and Mrs. Hughes’ wedding that takes place in a later season of the hit television show Downton Abbey, the recipe is a variation of the classic White Lady that also calls for gin as the base spirit, but it omits the original’s frothy egg white and swaps out orange liqueur for tart crème de cassis.
Cocktail Ingredients
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:
London Dry Gin: This is a type of gin made with juniper berries, botanicals, and alcohol that has been infused with flavor through redistillation without artificial ingredients or colors. We used Broker’s Premium London Dry Gin because it’s versatile and high proof. For a mocktail version of this drink, try MONDAY Zero Alcohol Gin in place of the gin.
Lemon Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lemon. We used freshly squeezed lemon juice.
Crème De Cassis: This is a liqueur made with blackcurrants, sugar, and alcohol. We used Maison Ferrand Mathilde Cassis Liqueur because it has a tart, bittersweet flavor. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Monin Premium Blackcurrant Syrup in place of the blackcurrant liqueur.
Gum Syrup: This is a rich simple syrup made with sugar, gum Arabic powder, and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s sous vide recipe.
Bartending Tools
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:
Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. We used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. We used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.
Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.
Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. We used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Tasting Notes
The Wedding Coat has slightly sour aromas of blackcurrant, a pleasantly bright citrus-forward taste balanced by the unique sweet flavors of the cassis, and a deep and complex finish that leaves you with just a slight bitterness.
Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: We chose to share this cocktail because we tied the knot on Sunday at the most beautiful vineyard and wanted to commemorate the day with a drink we both enjoyed. We had an open bar and considered including the Wedding Coat on the menu but ultimately chose two others because we thought this gin recipe might be a little too complex for the palates of everyday Midwesterners. However, we both thought it was a fabulous cocktaill and will be sipping on it again this week as we recover from our perfect celebration with loved ones.
Alex’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I found this drink to be very, very tasty! It’s a classic template with base + citrus + liqueur, but the slightly more unique crème de cassis gives it a dark and nearly-but-not-quite bitter flavor that I really liked. This is a great example of how swapping out one simple ingredient for another creates an entirely different drinking experience, and I would definitely not hesitate to make this one again.”
Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“This is such a tasty cocktail and a fitting one to share in honor of Alex’s and my wedding day, not just because of the name but because we both loved it. (Bowler) Hats off to the Downton Abbey authors who created it! The gin and crème de cassis are a pleasant pairing that is dry but not overly so. The only way to know how great it is is to try it for yourself!”
