Cocktail History

The Blueberry Mint Julep is a Sips From Scripts original cocktail that was created as a variation of the classic Mint Julep. Similar to the original, the recipe calls for bourbon mixed with muddled mint and simple syrup, but it adds blueberry flavor to the simple syrup for more complexity.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Bourbon: This is a type of whiskey made in the United States with at least 51% corn, grains, malted barley, and water. We used Wild Turkey 101 Straight Bourbon Whiskey because it has a deep oaky whiskey flavor. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Spiritless Kentucky 74 Non-Alcoholic Bourbon Whiskey in place of the whiskey.

Blueberry Syrup: This is a sweetener made with blueberries, white sugar, gum Arabic powder, citric acid, and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s sous vide recipe.

Mint Leaves: This is an herb. We used Mojito mint leaves.

Blueberries: This is a small blue fruit. We used fresh blueberries.

Mint Sprig: This is an herb. We used Mojito mint.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Muddler: This is used to muddle ingredients. We used the HQY Stainless Steel Cocktail Muddler.

Bar Spoon: This is used to stir ingredients. We used the Barfly Stainless Steel Teardrop Bar Spoon.

Tasting Notes

The Blueberry Mint Julep features cool aromas of mint to start, followed by the classic strong taste of sugar and mint-sweetened bourbon, and a bright aftertaste of sweet-tart blueberry.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: We both really enjoyed this fruity version of the Mint Julep! It combines the delicious strong flavors of the original Julep with a fruity note, setting it up as a sip you’d likely enjoy a few months later into the season then the derby typically takes place. It’s sure to please even an inexperienced bourbon drinker and will make any latecomer like us still feel like a winner.
