Cocktail History

The Jedi Mind Trick is a Star Wars cocktail that was created at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, an attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida and Anaheim, California. This copycat recipe, based on the ingredients listed on the menu at Oga’s Cantina, pairs a citrus and floral-flavored vodka from Ketel One with an interesting combination of white grape juice, tart grapefruit and lime, velvet falernum, and of course, colored curaçao to turn the recipe a bright, lightsaber-inspired hue.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Grapefruit & Rose Vodka: This is a type of vodka made with grapefruit, rose petals, grains, vegetables or fruits, and alcohol. This recipe specifically calls for Ketel One Botanical Grapefruit & Rose Vodka. For a mocktail version of this drink, try STRYKK Not V*dka, grapefruit juice, and rose water in place of the vodka.

White Grape Juice: This is the liquid juice of a green grape. We used Welch’s 100% White Grape Juice.

Velvet Falernum Liqueur: This is a liqueur made with ginger, lime, almond, cloves, sugar, and alcohol. For a mocktail version of this drink, try BG Reynolds Falernum Bar Syrup in place of the velvet falernum liqueur.

Lime Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lime. We used freshly squeezed lime juice.

Blue Curaçao: This is a liqueur made with oranges, sugar, spices, blue food coloring, and alcohol. This recipe specifically calls for Bols Blue Curaçao. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Monin Premium Blue Curaçao Syrup in place of the blue curaçao liqueur.

Grapefruit Bitters: This is a food product made with grapefruit peels, botanicals, and alcohol. We used Scrappy’s Bitters Organic Grapefruit Bitters.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. We used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. We used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. We used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Tasting Notes

The Jedi Mind Trick starts with grapefruit aromas and has a refreshingly sweet taste made up of grape, grapefruit, and a bit of florals before finishing with more sweet and sour grape flavor on the finish, along with a touch of the grapefruit bitters.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: Of the Oga’s Cantina drinks, this one was just okay to us, mostly because we thought the grape juice was a touch too prominent. The Jedi Mind Trick is definitely palatable and loads of fun to look at though, so this would be a hit with anyone who wants a fruity, colorful concoction on Star Wars Day.

Alex’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐
“Naturally, a drink created and paid for by Disney is going to be delicious, so I knew this one would be good. I also knew that, in order to make sense at a theme park, it would need to appeal to the widest range of palates possible and lack too much cocktail nerd complexity. I was right on both fronts: the strong hit of grape juice is front and center here, while most of the actual alcohol hides behind flavored vodka, bitters, and a touch of citrus. The Jedi Mind Trick is well balanced and obviously quite pretty, and it definitely fits the theme of its origin well.”

Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐
“Given that it’s served to the masses at a Disney theme park, I expected this to be pretty palatable, like Alex said. I don’t think I’ve ever tried white grape juice before and was surprised at how prominent it was in this recipe. I did think it overshadowed the other ingredients a bit, but the grapefruit in the vodka and bitters does dance across your tongue beautifully. If you don’t drink very often and want to make a fun Star Wars drink at home, this fits the bill.”
