Cocktail History

The Blood Orange Sunrise is a modern cocktail that was created by Clare Liardet and was first published in her book Dry: Delicious Handcrafted Cocktails & Other Clever Concoctions. The original is made by mixing several fresh citrus juices, including pomegranate, blood orange, and lime, and pairing them with a rich honey syrup and refreshing soda water. This version, however, adds vodka to make it boozy.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Soda Water: This is a type of water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. I used Topo Chico Sparkling Mineral Water.

Pomegranate Juice: This is the liquid juice of a pomegranate. I used POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice.

Vodka: This is a spirit made with grains, vegetables or fruits, and alcohol. I used Smirnoff Vodka.

Blood Orange Juice: This is the liquid juice of a blood orange. I used freshly squeezed blood orange juice.

Lime Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lime. I used freshly squeezed lime juice.

Honey Syrup: This is a sweetener made with honey and water. I made mine using this stovetop recipe.

Blood Orange Twist: This is the peel of a blood orange that has been twisted into a corkscrew shape.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. I used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. I used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. I used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. I used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. I used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Peeler: This is used to remove the garnish peel from the citrus. I used the OXO Good Grips 2-Piece Peeler Set.

Kendall’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Kendall’s Take: “This cocktail is just as it sounds—refreshing, tangy, and delicious! Although it certainly doesn’t need to be boozy, I did add a touch of vodka into my Blood Orange Sunrise to turn it back into a cocktail and would love to try it again with some tequila, champagne, or even sake.”
