Cocktail History
The Blood Orange Sunrise is a modern cocktail that was created by Clare Liardet and was first published in her book Dry: Delicious Handcrafted Cocktails & Other Clever Concoctions. The original is made by mixing several fresh citrus juices, including pomegranate, blood orange, and lime, and pairing them with a rich honey syrup and refreshing soda water. This version, however, adds vodka to make it boozy.
Cocktail Ingredients
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:
Soda Water: This is a carbonated beverage made with water and dissolved carbon dioxide gas, which gives it a fizzy, neutral flavor.
Pomegranate Juice: This is the liquid extracted from the flesh of ripe pomegranates that has a deep, tart citrus flavor and dark red-pink color.
Vodka: This is a spirit made with fermented grains or potatoes and water, which are distilled and then filtered to develop a clean, neutral flavor.
Blood Orange Juice: This is the liquid extracted from the flesh of ripe blood oranges that has a sweet-tart citrus flavor and deep red color.
Lime Juice: This is the liquid extracted from the flesh of ripe limes that has a zesty, sour flavor and light green color.
Honey Syrup: This is a sweetener made with honey and water, which are heated and infused into a syrup with a sweet flavor.
Blood Orange Twist: This is a strip of blood orange peel that’s been twisted into a corkscrew shape to release its oils.
Bartending Tools
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:
Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. I used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. I used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. I used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.
Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. I used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.
Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. I used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.
Peeler: This is used to remove the garnish peel from the citrus. I used the OXO Good Grips 2-Piece Peeler Set.

Tasting Notes
This cocktail has the following flavor profile:
• Appearance: Dark magenta color
• Aroma: Strong citrus
• Taste: Bold and tangy citrus flavor with undertones with pomegranate, honey, and a slight alcohol burn
• Finish: More multifaceted citrus
Kendall’s Take: “This cocktail is just as it sounds—refreshing, tangy, and delicious! Although it certainly doesn’t need to be boozy, I did add a touch of vodka into my Blood Orange Sunrise to turn it back into a cocktail and would love to try it again with some tequila, champagne, or even sake.”
