Cocktail History

The Marriage of Maguey is a modern cocktail that was created by Alex Sukopp, former bartender of Sips From Scripts, for Mozart Distillery’s Coffee Chocolate Liqueur. Inspired by a similar recipe in Death & Company’s new book Welcome Home: A Cocktail Recipe Book, this version pairs the smoky flavors of mezcal and tequila with citrus as well as the coffee and cocoa notes in the liqueur to create a decadent dessert drink for those who enjoy the earthy flavors of agave. Its name is also a nod to mezcal and the composer after whom Mozart Liqueurs were named.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Mezcal: This is a spirit made in Mexico with agave, sugar, and alcohol that is aged in an underground pit lined with wood. I used Del Maguey Vida Mezcal.

Tequila Reposado: This is a type of tequila made in Mexico with blue agave, sugar, and alcohol that is aged from two to twelve months. I used Arette Tequila Reposado.

Coffee Chocolate Liqueur: This is a liqueur made with white chocolate, coffee beans, spices, sugar, and alcohol. I used Mozart Distillery Coffee Chocolate Liqueur.

Orange Curaçao: This is a liqueur made with oranges, sugar, and brandy or rum. I used Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge.

Agave Syrup: This is a sweetener that is made from the fluid inside agave plants. I made mine using this stovetop recipe.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. I used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Mixing Glass: This is used to hold the ingredients while they’re being stirred. I used the Viski 17 oz Cocktail Mixing Glass.

Bar Spoon: This is used to stir ingredients. I used the Barfly Stainless Steel Teardrop Bar Spoon.

Julep Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is stirred. I used the A Bar Above Julep Strainer.

The Marriage of Maguey Cocktail Recipe

Tasting Notes

This cocktail has the following flavor profile:

Appearance: Chocolate brown color

• Aroma: Mezcal and coffee

• Taste: Rich and thick chocolatey flavor paired with smoky agave and deep coffee

• Finish: Slightly smoky notes

Kendall’s Rating: ⭐⭐

Kendall’s Take: “I affectionately named this recipe ‘Cocoa Car Tire’ when I first tasted it because I still don’t really care for mezcal. I could see myself getting there with this cocktail though! The mezcal is noticeable but doesn’t burn thanks to the sweeter ingredients. It’s like a desert-inspired dessert drink. If you’re already a fan of agave spirits, pick up a bottle of Mozart’s heavenly coffee chocolate liqueur and give The Marriage of Maguey a try.”
