Cocktail History
The Banana Hot Buttered Rum is an autumn cocktail that was created by bar manager and author Nick Mautone and was first published in his book The Artisanal Kitchen: Holiday Cocktails. It’s a banana-flavored variation of the classic Hot Buttered Rum that calls for dark rum, warm water, homemade banana butter, and baking spices.
Cocktail Ingredients
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:
Water: This is a colorless liquid that stretches the recipe. I used hot filtered water.
Dark Rum: This is a type of rum made with fermented sugarcane juice or molasses and yeast, which are distilled and then aged, often in charred barrels, to develop a full-bodied, caramelized flavor.
Banana Butter: This is a spread made with bananas, butter, sugar, and spices, which are blended and then cooked down into a smooth, rich condiment.
Star Anise: This is a spice made from the fruit of an evergreen tree, which is dried for its strong, licorice-like flavor.
Cinnamon Stick: This is a spice made from dried and rolled bark of the cinnamon tree that has a warm, sweet-spicy flavor.
Nutmeg: This is a spice made from the seeds of the nutmeg tree, which are dried and grated for their warm, aromatic flavor.
Bartending Tools
To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:
Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. I used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.
Spreader: This is used to cut and spread ingredients. I used the WÜSTHOF Gourmet 5-Inch Spreader.
Saucepan: This is used to warm the ingredients. I used the Cuisinart 3-Quart Stainless Steel Saucepan with Cover.
Spoon: This is used to stir the ingredients. I used the OXO Good Grips Silicone Spoon.
Ladle: This is used to transfer the drink to cups. I used the OXO Good Grips Silicone Everyday Ladle.
Grater: This is used to grate spices or citrus peel. I used the OXO Good Grips Grater.

Tasting Notes
This cocktail has the following flavor profile:
• Appearance: Yellow-ish brown color
• Aroma: Fragrant spices
• Taste: Spicy rum flavor laced with baking spices and creamy banana
• Finish: Slight alcohol burn and spices
Kendall’s Take: “This is a really unique take on a Hot Buttered Rum that is sure to be a hit with banana lovers. To be honest, as delicious as the Banana Hot Buttered Rum was, I probably won’t make it again because it takes too long to make the banana butter and I don’t like banana-flavored anything enough to make all of the work worth it. If you want a cozy drink for a cold night, this is an excellent choice though!”
