Cocktail History

The Deep Cleanse is a modern cocktail that was created at FIG, a restaurant and bar in Santa Monica, California. The recipe pairs the crisp botanicals of gin with refreshing aloe vera juice, simple syrup for sweetness, sour citrus for balance, and cooling cucumber to create a revitalizing spring drink.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Gin: This is a spirit made with juniper berries, botanicals, and alcohol. We used Prairie Organic Spirits Gin because it has a classic juniper flavor with notes of citrus and spices. For a mocktail version of this drink, try MONDAY Zero Alcohol Gin in place of the gin.

Aloe Vera Juice: This is a thick liquid made from the flesh of the aloe vera plant leaf. We used Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Juice.

Simple Syrup: This is a sweetener made with white sugar and water. We made ours at home using Alex’s stovetop recipe.

Lime Juice: This is the liquid juice of a lime. We used freshly squeezed lime juice.

Cucumber Slice: This is a cucumber slice that has been thinly cut into wheel shape.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Muddler: This is used to muddle ingredients. We used the HQY Stainless Steel Cocktail Muddler.

Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. We used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. We used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut citrus into slices or wheels. We used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. We used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Tasting Notes

The Deep Cleanse features fresh aromas of cucumber, and the taste has a hint of lime tartness at first before blending into a refreshing combination of cool aloe vera and cucumber with gin botanicals, which all go down smoothly with a touch of sweetness on the throat.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: Seeing aloe vera on this drink’s list of ingredients made us have fairly low expectations of the tasting going in, but we were both pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed the Deep Cleanse. This is a good one to save for a stressful day when you want to relax.

Kendall’s Take: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw aloe vera juice on this cocktail’s list of ingredients since like Alex I had never tried it, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. I would describe the Deep Cleanse as taking a trip to the spa in boozy beverage form. It’s light, refreshing, and cool thanks to the cucumber and aloe vera. Very unique and worth a try, for sure!”
