Cocktail History

The Stout Sangaree is a modern cocktail that was first published in The Official Downton Abbey Cocktail Book by Lou Bustamante. Similar to the Black Velvet, the recipe calls for a unique combination of dry stout beer and wine, but this version uses a dark and rich ruby port instead of sparkling wine and tops it all off with fragrant nutmeg.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Dry Stout Beer: This is a type of dark beer made with hops, malted barley, yeast, and water. We used Guinness Draught Stout because smooth and creamy. For a mocktail version of this drink, try Guinness 0 Non-Alcoholic Draught in place of the beer.

Ruby Port: This is a fortified wine made in Portugal with a blend of red grapes. We used Sandeman Fine Ruby Porto because it has a full-bodied flavor with notes of fruit, chocolate, and spices. For a mocktail version of this drink, try R.W. Knudsen Just Concord Grape Juice mixed with lime zest in place of the wine.

Grated Nutmeg: This is a spice made from the seed of a nutmeg tree. We used whole nutmeg from the bulk section at our local grocery store.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. We used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Grater: This is used to grate spices or citrus peel. We used the OXO Good Grips Grater.

Tasting Notes

The Stout Sangaree features the aromas of sweet nutmeg and stout as well as strong flavors of the beer and an extremely noticeable ruby port component that offers a softness and lightness that the Guinness alone wouldn’t have on its own.

Our Opinion of This Cocktail Recipe: Although it’s certainly a hearty drink, Alex, who generally enjoys beer but isn’t crazy about stouts, thought this would be a great dessert drink, especially for those who like beer but don’t necessarily want just a beer or those who don’t care for stout but are open to trying something new. And Kendall, who rarely drinks beer, thought the Stout Sangaree was surprisingly tasty and would probably be the only way she would enjoy a stout.
