Cocktail History

The Haunted Pumpkin Patch Margarita is a Halloween cocktail that was created in 2022 by Tieghan Gerard of Half Baked Harvest. Somewhat of a cross between a Moscow Mule and a Margarita, the recipe mixes apple cider, tequila, and citrus liqueur with a delicious and thick pumpkin butter and tops it all off with spicy ginger beer.

Cocktail Ingredients

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following ingredients:

Apple Cider: This is a beverage made with freshly pressed apple juice and baking spices. I used The Glass Orchard Apple Cider.

Tequila Blanco: This is a spirit made with unaged agave and water. I used Casamigos Tequila Blanco.

Triple Sec: This is a liqueur made with bitter oranges, lemons, sugar, and alcohol. I used Cointreau.

Spiced Pumpkin Butter: This is a butter made with pumpkin purée, apple cider, maple syrup, vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and salt. I made mine at home using this recipe.

Ginger Beer: This is a carbonated beverage made with ginger spice, yeast, and sugar. I used Q Mixers Ginger Beer.

Simple Syrup: This is a sweetener made with white sugar and water. I made mine at home using this stovetop recipe.

Sugar: This is a sweet-tasting, soluble carbohydrate. I used C&H Pure Cane Granulated Sugar.

Ground Cinnamon: This is a spice. I used Simply Organic Ground Cinnamon.

Cayenne Pepper: This is a ground type of moderately hot pepper. I used Simple Organic Cayenne Pepper.

Bartending Tools

To make this cocktail, you’ll need the following bar tools:

Jigger: This is used to measure and pour ingredients. I used the Japanese jigger from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Boston Shaker: This is used to shake ingredients. I used the Boston shaker from the A Bar Above 14-Piece Silver Bar Set.

Hawthorne Strainer: This is used to strain out ice and solid ingredients after the cocktail is shaken. I used the A Bar Above Hawthorne Strainer.

Paring Knife: This is used to cut ingredients. I used the OXO Good Grips 3.5 Inch Paring Knife.

Juicer: This is used to juice citrus. I used the ALEEHAI Manual Fruit Juicer.

Tasting Notes

This cocktail has the following flavor profile:

Appearance: Brilliant burnt orange color

• Aroma: Pumpkin with slight agave notes

• Taste: A thick milkshake-list texture that combines sweetened pumpkin and sharp tequila

• Finish: A touch of apple and baking spices

Kendall’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kendall’s Take: “Aside from an ice cream drink, this might be the thickest cocktail I’ve ever tried. The pumpkin butter adds loads of interesting texture, and it packs in about as much pumpkin flavor as you could in a cocktail. I think I prefer my pumpkin spice syrup over a thick butter for a drink like this one, but the pumpkin butter was so good that I’d 100% make a batch to use in other ways. Give the Haunted Pumpkin Patch Margarita a try with either the butter or our syrup regardless because it’s quite tasty.”
